Zenas Hsu was born in 1991.
He began violin at the age of five, and
is currently studying violin with Wei He and Camilla Wicks. He is also
studying chamber music with Susan Bates and Mack McCray at the
San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Zenas has won numerous competitions. He has performed extensively and has participated in several national and international competitions as well as master classes with prominent musicians, such as Pamela Frank, Kyoko Takezawa, Ida Kavafian, Axel Strauss, Ian Swensen, Jeremy Menuhin, and the Miami String Quartet.
Zenas has also been granted several scholarships, including full scholarships from 2005 to 2007 for the chamber music program at the Hotchkiss Summer Portals, 2005 Music@Menlo Summer Chamber Music camp, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music Prep. Division since 2003.
He was accepted by the New York String Orchestra Seminar, on Dec. 19-28, 2006, in New York City. The seminar conducted live auditions with young musicians, aged 15-22, in seven U.S. major cities. Zenas was the youngest among the 62 national and international young musicians being chosen. The seminar orchestra, led by Maestro Jaime Laredo, performed two recitals with violinist Jennifer Koh and with pianist Leon Fleisher at the New York Carnegie Hall on December 24 and December 28 respectively.
Zenas has appeared as the soloist with the Oakland East Bay Symphony, the Prometheus Symphony, and the Diablo Valley College Orchestra. On May 13 and 20 in 2007, Zenas will perform Schostakovich's Concerto No. 1 with the California Youth Symphony at the Flint Center in Cupertino and at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center.
Zenas plays a 1760 Carlo Fernando Landolfi violin and a Francois Jude Gaulard bow, both are on generous loan by the Chi Mei Culture Foundation, Taiwan.
